The Portland Trail Blazers' newest center, Donovan Clingan, has quickly made an impression on the team and its fans. With his impressive size, defensive prowess, and potential for growth, Clingan has become a source of excitement and intrigue for the Blazers faithful. As he continues to acclimate to the NBA game, the question arises: could Clingan be the answer to the team's long-standing need for a dominant big man?

Clingan's Defensive Dominance: Altering the Blazers' Landscape

Towering Presence, Impactful Presence

Clingan's physical attributes are immediately noticeable, standing at an imposing 7'2" and weighing in at 280 pounds. This sheer size and mass set him apart from his teammates, creating a stark contrast that has not been seen in the Blazers' lineup for some time. His presence on the court is undeniable, and his ability to alter shots and protect the rim has already made a significant impact.

Mastering the Art of Rim Protection

One of Clingan's most impressive attributes is his shot-blocking prowess. In just two appearances, he has already amassed an impressive tally of 5 blocks, with several more shots altered through his mere presence. His ability to position himself correctly, move his feet, and angle his body to contest shots without fouling is a testament to his defensive instincts and body control. This level of defensive awareness and execution is rare for a young player, and it has already begun to disrupt opposing offenses.

Adapting to Different Offensive Styles

Clingan's defensive impact has been evident in the Blazers' matchups against the Golden State Warriors and the New Orleans Pelicans. Against the Warriors, a team known for their perimeter shooting and ball movement, Clingan held his own, showcasing his ability to adapt to different offensive styles. However, it was in the Pelicans game that Clingan truly shone, as he faced off against the physical presence of Zion Williamson. Clingan's size and positioning allowed him to challenge Williamson at the rim, providing a level of resistance that the Blazers have lacked in recent years.

Rebounding: A Work in Progress

While Clingan's defensive prowess is undeniable, his rebounding game is still a work in progress. Given his impressive size and physical attributes, there are high expectations for Clingan to become a dominant rebounder. However, it's important to note that the transition to the NBA game can be challenging, and Clingan's rebounding skills may require some time to fully develop. As he continues to gain experience and adapt to the pace and physicality of the league, it's reasonable to expect Clingan's rebounding numbers to improve.

Mobility and Versatility: Exceeding Expectations

Another aspect of Clingan's game that has impressed is his mobility and versatility. Despite his towering frame, Clingan has demonstrated the ability to move his feet and close out on shooters, showcasing a level of agility and body control that is often lacking in players of his size. This versatility allows him to be effective in a variety of defensive scenarios, making him a valuable asset for the Blazers' defensive schemes.

Offensive Development: The Next Step

While Clingan's defensive impact has been the primary focus, his offensive game is also an area of interest. So far, his offensive contributions have been limited to the area around the rim, with his scoring coming primarily from put-backs and close-range shots. As he continues to acclimate to the NBA game, it will be crucial for Clingan to expand his offensive repertoire and develop a more well-rounded scoring ability. This will not only enhance his individual impact but also provide the Blazers with a more versatile offensive threat in the frontcourt.

Earning a Starting Role: A Matter of Time?

The question of whether Clingan could earn a starting role this season or in the near future is an intriguing one. While the Blazers currently have Deandre Ayton as their starting center, Clingan's defensive prowess and potential for growth make him a compelling option. However, the Blazers may opt to bring Clingan along slowly, allowing him to learn and develop off the bench before potentially transitioning him into a starting role. Clingan's foul trouble and the need for Ayton's floor-spacing abilities may also factor into the Blazers' decision-making process. Nonetheless, Clingan's impressive start has certainly put him on the radar as a potential long-term solution at the center position for the Blazers.
